Overview

Your student will be learning:

to write, build, and say the number when given a set of objects, including zero.

that counting is more than just saying numbers out loud. Counting also tells the total number of objects in a set (one-to-one correspondence).
there is a symbol for each number word.
- example:
  - one 1
  - two 2
  - three 3
  - four 4
  - five 5
how to subitize, which means to instantly recognize quantities up to ten, such as knowing that a dice is showing 5 without counting the dots.

- Developing Early Number Sense. This parent article discusses the importance of number sense and gives suggested activities to build on it.

- Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow. In this story, monkeys jump and fall off the bed as they are counted.
- What Comes in 2’s 3’s & 4’s? by Suzanne Aker. This book introduces numbers 1-4 with everyday objects that may be familiar to your child.
- Five Little Ducks by Annie Kubler. Children love this catchy rhyme about five ducks.
