Your student will be learning:
- numbers can be added in any order
- place value is important when adding and subtracting larger numbers.
Example:
When adding 6,237 and 43,925, line up the place value of each digit in both numbers.
Add the ones place first, regrouping 12 ones for 1 ten and 2 ones, etc.
(Grid paper will help students organize the place values when adding and subtracting larger numbers.)

- Subtraction with Regrouping: This Math Antics video demonstrates how to subtract greater numbers with regrouping. Although the word “borrowing “ is used in the video, your child should be using the word “regrouping” to describe this process.

- Word Problems with Katie on Math Playground. MathPlayground.com allows your child to solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction word problems that are self-checking. It has a “help” button that gives a clue if needed after entering the incorrect answer.

- Math Potatoes: Mind-Stretching Brain Food by Greg Tang. This rhyming book uses riddles to visualize different ways to group items for addition.
- Math-terpieces: The Art of Problem Solving by Greg Tang. This rhyming book shows various ways to group a number.
- The Lunch Line by Karen Berman Nagel and Marilyn Burns. In this story, Kim forgets her lunch and needs to determine what she can order off of the menu with 2 quarters and 5 dimes.
