Mechanical Design Rules and Standards:
Units and Fasteners
All designs shall use metric units exclusively
Approved fastener sizes: M3, M4, M6 only
All hardware (bolts, nuts, inserts) must be metric
Mixing imperial and metric units is not permitted
Threading and Inserts
All threaded inserts will be helicoil thread inserts
Fastener Selection
Nylock nuts are the default locking method
Threadlocker (Loctite) is required for:
Semi-permanent assemblies
Permanent installations into metal components
Example: motor mounts
Fluid System Standards
All water cooling components shall use:
¼” G-thread (BSPP/G 1/4) fittings
CAD and Design Environment
All parts and assemblies must be created in SolidWorks
Files must be saved as native SolidWorks design files:
.SLDPRT
.SLDASM
Drawings and Documentation
All drawings must:
Use the standard team drawing template
Include fully defined dimensions
Include material specification
Be fully defined
Each part must include:
Manufacturing dimensions
Tolerances where required
Documentation must include:
Instructions for use
Required tools
Assembly guidance (if applicable)
Design for Procurement
Before designing a custom part, the designer must ask:
“Can this be purchased off-the-shelf?”
Off-the-shelf components are preferred unless:
Cost, performance, or packaging requires custom design
File Management
All files must be:
Stored in the correct directory in PDM
Named according to team conventions
No local-only or untracked files are allowed
Design Completion Requirements
A design is considered invalid if any of the following are missing:
Fully dimensioned drawings
Material specification
Proper file storage
Required documentation
Approved fastener standards not followed
Design Review and Release
All designs must be:
Reviewed and approved prior to production
No part may be manufactured without:
Completed drawings
Documentation
Approval sign-off
