Topic: Post-Secondary Planning
Goal Statement: Students will learn about different colleges/post-secondary options in Iowa.
ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors Standard (s): M 4: Understanding the post-secondary education and lifelong learning are necessary for long term career success. B-SS 9:Demonstrate social maturity and behaviors appropriate to the situation and environment.
Materials:
Your Course to College Guide Booklet (students can take these home)
Quiz Show Slides at bottom of page
scratch paper
Laptop
Procedures:
1. Pass out Your Course to College Guide Booklets
2. Give the students a few minutes to look over booklet, highlight the following:
p. 10-13, grade level checklists, information on choosing a college/major, types of colleges, admission process
p. 21-37, paying for college, FAFSA, scholarships, grants etc.
p. 49-79, detailed information for all colleges & universities in Iowa broken down by regents, private, community colleges, other
3. Quiz Show Game
Divide students into partners or small teams, take out a piece of scratch paper and number 1-9.
Explain to students they will have 20 seconds (or how many seconds the teacher decides)to find the answer to the Trivia Questions using "Your Course to College Booklet". Click on slide to reveal answer. Team with the most points win.
