Grade: 9 &12

Lesson Title: Senior Panels

Objective: Students will understand how their grades will affect GPA, scholarships, future plans, etc. They will also understand why getting involved in school activities is important.

ASCA Mindset & Behaviors Standard (s) B-SMS 10: Demonstrate ability to manage transitions and ability to adapt to changing situations and responsibilities, M 3: Sense of belonging in the school environment, B-SMS 8: Demonstrate the ability to balance school, home and community activities.

Materials: None

Procedures:

    1. Senior Connection classes will be paired with Freshman. Feel free to switch if you need to. Seniors will travel to the freshmen classrooms after attendance, along with teacher.

2. Have the seniors introduce themselves and sit in a panel in front of the class.

3. The seniors will talk about their experience with grades both bad and good and the impact they have had on GPA and post-secondary plans.

4. Seniors will talk about how their attitudes have changed about school from their freshman year and what they would have done differently if they knew then, what they know now.

5. Use these “prompters” if students have trouble brainstorming questions to ask seniors:

                • What is one thing you wish you would have done differently in HS?

        • What were your favorite activities that you participated in during HS?

        • Are volunteer hours important?

        • What are you most proud of during HS?

        • How does your GPA affect you now?

        • What steps do we need to take to plan for college?

        • What advice do you wish you would have followed when you were a freshman?
