Lesson: - Diversity
Grade: 9
Objective: To help participants see how much diversity is in their group and to assist participants in examining elements of diversity that are obvious or not obvious.
ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors Standard (s): B-SS 2: Create positive and supportive relationships with other students B-SS 7: Use leadership and teamwork skills to work effectively in diverse teams.
Materials:
Bingo Sheets (in mailbox) Diversity BINGO
Scratch paper and pencil
Procedures:
With a partner have each student briefly discuss what the definition of Diversity is and what Diversity means to them (maybe write your definition on the board. )
After you have developed your definition, read the actual definition: Diversity Definition
Handout BINGO Cards and announce the game rules to everyone.
Tell the players that they must mill about the room and talk to each other.
Have each player go around the group and ask other people questions that applies to them in order to check off boxes.
One person may be used to check off no more than two boxes.
Names or signatures on multiple boxes won't count.
Reinforce that socializing is a must!
Reflection questions:
Ask who got BINGO and which one’s people struggled to obtain
What did you learn about the diversity of your advisory group?
Discuss how our activities today relate to the diversity that everyone faces in their lives.
Ask the group, “Why do you think it’s difficult for people to accept other people’s differences? ”
Generate a list that answers the question: What are some ways to encourage and promote diversity in our school/community?
