The USTEP office offers a program called "USTEP Partners" to support interactions between exchange students (Type U) and local UTokyo students. The Partners are local, regular UTokyo students who volunteer to participate in this program. They will support your campus life as friendly advisors and companions.

USTEP Partners was created to facilitate student interactions by forming multiple small groups, as the increasing number of exchange students makes it difficult to hold large-scale gatherings. We encourage you to take full advantage of this program, actively engaging with your group rather than waiting for opportunities to come to you. Make meaningful connections and enjoy various activities together.

Group assignments are determined by lottery, taking into account factors such as campus location, faculty/graduate school, year of study, and gender balance. We encourage you to embrace this unexpected encounters and enjoy international exchange with an open mind.

Your group assignments will be announced via email before the orientation. On the day of orientation, your Partners will welcome you, and each group will sit together. Enjoy this first meeting!

For operational reasons, all USTEP Type U students will be assigned to a group, but the frequency and nature of your group’s activities are entirely up to you and your group members. This program is designed to only encourage active exchange, not to impose mandatory participation—so please feel at ease!

USTEPオフィスでは、「USTEP Partners」というプログラムを通して、交換留学生（Type U）と本学の学生との交流を支援しています。Partnersは、本学の正規課程に在籍する学生で、公募により選ばれたメンバーです。彼らは、気軽に相談できる相手や友人として、皆さんのキャンパスライフをサポートします。

USTEP Partnersは、交換留学生の数が増え、全員が一堂に会して交流することが難しくなったことを受け、学生同士がより気軽に交流できるようにと、小規模のグループを複数作る形で2023年Aセメスターにスタートしました。ぜひこの制度を積極的に活用し、受け身にならず、お互いに交流を深めながら、グループごとに有意義な活動を展開してください。

グループ分けは、活動可能なキャンパスや学部・研究科・学年・ジェンダーなどのバランスを考慮し、抽選によって決定されます。偶然の出会いを楽しみ、オープンマインドで国際交流を満喫してください。

グループの発表は、オリエンテーション前にメールで行われます。オリエンテーション当日は、Partnersが皆さんを歓迎し、グループごとに着席します。初めての顔合わせの時間を楽しんでください！

運営上の都合により、すべての交換留学生にグループが割り当てられますが、その後の活動の頻度や内容は各グループの皆さんの自由です。このプログラムは、あくまで交流を活発にするためのサポート制度であり、強制的なものではありません。リラックスして気軽に参加してください！

USTEP Partners is a new initiative launched in the 2023 Autumn semester to provide opportunities for UTokyo students to actively engage in international exchange. As partners of USTEP Type U exchange students, you will support them in enriching their student life, plan and organize exchange events, and engage in mutual learning of languages, cultures, and values. This program allows you to gain international exchange experience without leaving campus. Additionally, by interacting with exchange students from diverse cultural backgrounds, you can develop practical language skills and communication abilities.

The program is based on small groups consisting of USTEP students and Partners students. Each group determines its activities through discussion, allowing both exchange and local students to engage in more spontaneous and creative exchange experiences.

Application and Requirements

Recruitment for USTEP Partners takes place every year around January–February or July–August. The application guidelines will be posted on the UTAS bulletin board, so please make sure to check for updates. The program duration is generally one semester, but students enrolled in a regular course of study may apply for continued participation (applications from students on a leave of absence are not accepted).

Students selected as Partners are required to attend two events: a Partners Guidance held around late March/September and the USTEP Orientation for new USTEP students at the beginning of the semester. In the Partners Guidance, the USTEP Office will provide detailed guidance on Partners activities, and Partners within the same group will meet to discuss their plans. In the USTEP Orientation, Partners will welcome newly enrolled USTEP students and support group-based operations.

UTokyo Slack: USTEP Workspace

As a communication tool between the USTEP Office and Partners, we use UTokyo Slack. Once you have been accepted as a partner, please make sure to join the designated workspace. (Details about the workspace will be provided separately after acceptance.)

Please note that a UTokyo Account is required to use UTokyo Slack. Additionally, completing the Information Security Training and enabling multi-factor authentication for your UTokyo Account are mandatory. Please ensure that your account is created and all necessary procedures are completed in advance.

募集と要件等

USTEP Partnersの募集は、毎年１月～２月または７月～８月頃に行われます。UTAS掲示板に募集要項が掲載されるので、興味のある方は確認するようにしてください。活動期間は原則一学期ごとですが、正規過程に在籍していれば継続して応募することもできます（休学中の応募はできません）。

Partnersに採用された学生は、3月/9月末頃に開催されるPartners向けの「事前説明会」と、新学期に開催されるUSTEP生向けの「USTEP オリエンテーション」の2つのイベントに参加することが必須になります。「事前説明会」では、USTEPオフィスが活動に関する説明を行ったあと、同じグループのPartners同士が顔を合わせ、今後の活動方針を決めます。「USTEPオリエンテーション」では、新たに入学したUSTEP生を迎え入れ、グループごとに運営のサポートを行っていただきます。

UTokyo Slack: USTEP Workspace

USTEP オフィスとPartnersの皆さんとのあいだのコミュニケーションツールとして、UTokyo Slackを使用しています。Partnersに採用されたあと、からなず指定のワークスペースに参加してください。（ワークスペースの詳細情報は、採用後に別途連絡しますご連絡します。）

なお、UTokyo Slackを利用するためには、UTokyo Accountが必要です。また、利用にあたっては、情報セキュリティ教育の受講の完了とUTokyo Accountの多要素認証の有効化が必須です。事前にアカウントの作成と利用手続きを完了してください。

USTEP Partners engage in various activities designed to facilitate cultural exchange and support USTEP Type U students in adapting to campus life. While each group decides its own activities, here are some common examples:  

1. Campus and Daily Life Support 

• Giving campus tours and helping USTEP students get familiar with facilities  

• Assisting with course registration and navigating academic resources  

• Providing tips on daily life in Japan (e.g., transportation, shopping, local customs)  

2. Cultural Exchange Activities

• Organizing language exchange meetups  

• Introducing Japanese culture through activities like calligraphy, tea ceremonies, or traditional games  

• Sharing and learning about each other’s cultural traditions and customs  

3. Social and Recreational Gatherings

• Hosting welcome and farewell parties for USTEP students  

• Planning group outings, such as city tours, hiking trips, or museum visits  

• Arranging casual meetups for lunch, dinner, or café visits  

4. Collaborative Learning and Skill Development

• Helping USTEP students practice Japanese conversation  

• Learning new languages from USTEP students through language exchange  

• Discussing academic topics and career aspirations in an international setting  

5. Special Events and Seasonal Activities

• Participating in university festivals and local events together  

• Organizing seasonal activities like hanami (cherry blossom viewing), summer festivals, or holiday celebrations  

• Visiting cultural or historical sites as a group  

These activities are meant to foster meaningful relationships and mutual learning between USTEP students and Partners. Each group is encouraged to be creative and take initiative in planning their own events! 

*For convenience, groups are organized to make activities easier. However, please note there are no restrictions on interaction between different groups, which may arise from connections between Partners or exchange students.

これらの活動は、USTEP生とPartnersとの間で意義のある交友関係を築き、お互いに学び合うことを目的としています。各グループは自由に創造的な活動を計画し、積極的に取り組んでください！

※活動がしやすいようグループ分けをしていますが、パートナー間や留学生間のつながりなどをきっかけに、異なるグループ同士で交流をすることに制限はありません。

Both exchange students and USTEP Partners should engage in activities with an understanding and respect for each other's cultures. The expectations regarding the type and frequency of exchange may vary from student to student. Be mindful of each other's needs and respond flexibly.

Additionally, please ensure that activities are balanced with your academic commitments, and do not place excessive burden on either side. Changes in academics or career paths may lead to an unexpectedly busy schedule at the beginning of the semester. In such cases, work together as a group to support each other and manage the situation cooperatively.

Harassment and any form of inappropriate behavior are, of course, not tolerated. Be aware that personal and cultural differences can lead to variations in how comfortable individuals feel with personal space, especially between different genders. Strive to find a comfortable and respectful distance through mutual understanding. However, if at any point you feel unsafe or witness a situation where another student feels uncomfortable, do not hesitate to consult with the university.

Keep in mind that actions and statements on social media are as important as those in person, so be sure to protect privacy and observe proper etiquette.

Students' familiarity with communication in Japanese, English, or other languages, as well as their exposure to different cultures, may vary. Pay attention to whether any student feels excluded from conversations or experiences a sense of isolation. Aim for open communication where everyone feels comfortable participating.

If any issues arise related to activities or if you have concerns about how to respond to certain situations, please consult with the USTEP Office promptly. Be careful not to handle problems on your own or without support.

留学生、USTEP Partnersの学生ともに、互いに文化を理解し、尊重しながら活動をすすめてください。留学生が、USTEP Partners（またはその逆）に期待する交流内容や頻度は、学生によって異なります。相手のニーズに配慮し、柔軟に対応しましょう。

また、学業等とのバランスを心掛け、双方にとって過重の負担にならない範囲で活動を行ってください。学業や進路の変更などにより、学期開始当初には想定していなかった忙しさになることも考えられます。そのような場合はグループで助け合い、協力して対応しましょう。

ハラスメント等につながる言動が許容されないのはもちろんのこと、心地よいと感じる対人距離・異性間の距離は、個人差・文化差が大きいことにも留意してください。お互いにとって気持ちの良い距離を、まずは学生同士で模索し、尊重してください。ただし、皆さん自身が安全と感じられない場合、そうした状況にある学生について見聞きした場合など、必要な時にはためらわずに大学に相談してください。

SNS 上での発言や行動は、オフラインの行動と同様に重要であることを認識し、プライバシーの保護など、適切なマナーを守りましょう。

日本語・英語等を用いたコミュニケーションへの慣れや、異文化との接触経験等は、留学生・USTEP Partners となる本学学生のどちらも、様々です。会話に参加できない学生がいないか、話題に入れず疎外感を感じている学生はいないかなどに注意し、みんなが気持ちよく参加できるオープンなコミュニケーションを心がけましょう。

活動に関連し、問題が生じた場合や、対応に関して不安なことがある場合は、早めにUSTEP Office（国際教育推進課学生交流チーム）に相談してください。学生だけで抱え込んで対応することがないように注意してください。
