Standards Revision Process

Ohio updates its learning standards and model curriculum using a defined process and structure. The Department maintains a website, Standards and Model Curriculum Revision: Overview, to communicate the current status and opportunities for the field.

Ohio revises its learning standards on a regular cycle and utilizes the following process, Ohio’s Learning Standards Review Process

Stakeholder Groups

Teachers have the opportunity to participate in the process through nominations to the working groups.

Advisory Groups

  • Invitation from the department, state-level professional educator organizations

  • Provides guidance for the scope of work

  • Identifies and recommends resources for the working group to consider

  • Identifies documents including other state, national, or international standards to guide the revision process

  • Reviews and approves edits to Ohio's Learning Standards in response to the comments and suggestions from the public comment period

Working Groups

  • Accepts nominations, Ohio educators, experts in their subject area

  • Write and edit the standards in the development/revision process

  • Propose revisions to the standards based on comments from public feedback
