Mathematics

The Mathematics landing page maintained by the Ohio Department of Education has subject-specific detailed information related to the Ohio's Learning Standards, model curriculum, resources and assessments.

Learning Standards

The Learning Standards webpage for Mathematics contains substantial foundational information pertaining to understanding the Mathematics standards, including information on the 2017 revision process, learning progressions, critical areas of focus and gap analysis support tools.

The current Ohio Mathematics learning standards were adopted in 2017. The PDF of the standards is available on the site; if you would like a spreadsheet version, it can be downloaded here: 2017 Mathematics Standards

ODE has produced a few short videos on the highlights of each grade band's standards.

Critical Areas of Focus

The Critical Areas of Focus documents in mathematics are designed to bring focus to the standards in each grade/course by describing the big ideas that educators can use to build their curriculum and to guide instruction.

Model Curriculum

The Model Curriculum offers local educators in-depth guidance about groups or clusters of Ohio’s Learning Standards. It also explains related skills and knowledge students are to learn in each grade and course. The purpose of Ohio’s model curriculum is to provide clarity to the standards, as well as information to assist educators in planning and implementing their local curricula. The model curriculum is not a complete curriculum nor is it mandated for use. The model curriculum for mathematics includes these components:

Components of the Model Curriculum

  • Expectations for Learning

    • Essential Understandings

    • Mathematical Thinking

    • Instructional Focus

  • Content Elaborations

The Instructional Supports section of the Model Curriculum includes suggestions of best practice instructional methods and resources that address the skills and knowledge in the learning standards.

Standards for Mathematical Practice

The Standards for Mathematical Practice (MP) describe the skills that mathematics educators should seek to develop in their students. The practices rest on important processes and proficiencies with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The mathematical practices for each grade, together with Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a rigorous, coherent, useful and logical subject.

Mathematical Practices (MP) by Grade Level

The description of the mathematical practices remains the same at all grades. However, this webpage provides examples of how student performance will change and grow as they engage with and master new and more advanced mathematical ideas across the grade levels.

SMP Virtual PD Series

The Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies at the Ohio Department of Education, along with the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) facilitated free virtual professional development series on the Standards for Mathematical Practice (MPs). The ability to view these sessions is COMING SOON!

Resources

The Resources webpage for Mathematics contains a vast array of resources, including best practice videos, resources from Ohio partnering organizations as well as resources from organizations outside Ohio and links to supporting materials/resources. Take some time to review and explore the mathematics resources.

Depth of Knowledge in Mathematics

The Instructional Strategies for Mathematics page contains a variety of resources related to cognitive demand and depth of knowledge, specifically aligned to learning mathematics.

Assessments

The Assessments webpage for Mathematics contains a general overview outlining the different purposes of formative versus summative assessments, and then continues to house many of the same resources which can also be found in the Ohio's Assessment System portal. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with both portals so you can quickly and easily refer educators in the field to the assessment-related resources they may find valuable. A couple resources that Ohio has published only reside on this Assessments website. They are linked below.

Mathematics Resources by Course/Grade Level

The Assessments page contains links to sub-pages per course/grade level that contain all learning/assessment related resources. These pages serve as teacher-friendly pages for those interested only in a particular grade level. For example, please review the Grade 6 - Mathematics page.

Name a critical area of focus for fourth grade mathematics

Developing an understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends as part of effectively and efficiently performing multi-digit arithmetic Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and particular angle measures.

What is the first grade level that students are allowed a calculator on the math test?

Grade 6, unless they have accommodations that allow at grade 3+
