Before you begin your review of the tenure-track faculty member, familiarize yourself with Section 5.5.10 of the Faculty Handbook.
In the case of Nursing faculty members, the Dean of the School of Nursing is responsible for appointing the 3rd Year Peer Review Committee and writes the final report, which is submitted to the VPAA’s Office. By contrast, in the School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Programs, the division chair bears primary responsibility for appointing the 3rd Year Peer Review Committee and writing the final report, which is submitted to the VPAA’s Office. However, in the case where the division chair is the subject of a 3rd Year Review, the chair of the Tenure and Promotion Committee will create the 3rd Year Peer Review Committee and write the final report. Division chairs may also consult the Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Programs with respect to those tasks. Additionally, the Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Programs may submit their evaluation of faculty members to the VPAA either through email or in the form of a report similar to the structure recommended below for all school deans and division chairs.
It is recommended that the final report be structured like a letter of recommendation. The introductory paragraph should include the overall assessment of the candidate including whether you recommend that their contract be renewed. This should be followed by three paragraphs each of which assesses the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses with respect to teaching, scholarship, and service (if necessary, you can add extra paragraphs for each section). The latter assessment should be based on the tenure criteria in the faculty handbook. The report should conclude with 1-2 paragraphs that contain recommendations as to how to strengthen the final tenure portfolio.
