Hey there! Welcome to this part of School; The Full On Guide to literacy. In this first part, I'm going to teach you how to use a dictionary quickly and easily. Let's go!
A dictionary (on your left) is a book filled with hundreds of words and their meanings. It is used when you A- Have to find the meaning of a word B- Have to find the correct spelling of a word. They are used in any school pupils' every day life. If you don't own one, they can be bought at most book stores.
The easiest way to use a dictionary is what I call the Estimation Method. First, pick up your dictionary without opening it. Let's assume that you're trying to find the word Beach. The first thing you'd have to do is think- Is the first letter of the word Beach (B) closest to A or to Z in the alphabet?
Once you have that figured out (it really shouldn't take you more than three seconds), flip to a page that you think might be the B section. If it is, you got it! From there, you just have to use your eyes! If you flip up to a page that is totally irrelevant in your situation, please go to our Alphabet section.
An example of how to use a dictionary is shown in the video clip below. Please note that the word we re trying to find in the video is Beach.
