  • Create a mathematical model to show how you could use doubling and halving to solve 6 x 8.

Hint! You could use grid paper, dot paper, or even draw a comic strip!

  • Find 3 examples where doubling and halving isn't an efficient strategy.

  • Why is this strategy more efficient for some problems and not for others?

Instructions (select arrow)

  • Choose a target number between 0 - 100 and write this on your sheet of paper.

  • The first player rolls the dice and chooses whether to double or halve the number. Record the roll.

  • Take it in turns to roll the dice, keeping a running total. If a player can't go, they miss a turn.

  • The winner is the player who reaches the target number exactly.

Planning to keep myself safe from the sun
Duration: 5:06

The importance of making safe decisions when in the sun

It is very important to make safe decisions when you are in the sun because it can cause:

  • short-term injury or illness (e.g. heat stroke and sunburn)

  • long-term damage to your body that can lead to serious health issues.

Ways to stay safe in the sun

There are many ways to stay safe in the sun, including:

  • select an appropriate time of day and year to be in the sun

  • select an appropriate amount of time to be in the sun

  • wear protection such as a hat, long sleeves, sunscreen, sunglasses

  • reapply sunscreen frequently

  • seek shade

  • drink water.

What does UV mean?

  • UV stands for 'Ultraviolet'.

  • UV rays are the part of the Sun’s rays that cause damage. UV light can cause sunburn, wrinkles, skin cancer and damage the eyes.

  • It is always important to think about UV (ultraviolet) rays regardless of the season. It does not have to be hot for UV rays to damage your skin.

  • The amount of UV light that reaches us can depend on different things:

    • it is stronger during the middle of the day

    • if there are no clouds there is more UV light

    • the location can make a difference too – water, sand, and snow all reflect UV light, making it stronger.

  • To protect your skin from UV rays, you can wear protection such as a hat, long sleeves, sunscreen and sunglasses, and reapply sunscreen frequently.

What does SPF mean?

  • SPF stands for 'Sun Protection Factor'.

  • The SPF rating on sunscreen provides an amount of protection.

  • The higher the SPF number, the better the protection.

  • Just as sunscreen helps protect your skin from UV damage, you should also wear sunglasses that have UV protection. Wearing sunglasses without UV protection can cause damage.

  • Some swimsuits and rash shirts (‘rashies’) have UV/SPF ratings.

A catchy way to remember everything you need to protect yourself from the sun and UV rays is to follow the 5 steps below.

Slip on protective clothing that covers most of your body.
Slop on high SPF sunscreen on all exposed areas of your body
Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that protects your face, neck and ears
Seek shade from the sun.
Slide on high-protection sunglasses
Writing activity

Your task:

  • Create a poster to explain to people how to be safe in the sun.

  • Explain why the sun is dangerous.

  • Plan what you can do to protect yourself from the sun if you were going outside (e.g. to the park, beach, dam or outdoor sporting event).
