Read the directions and imagine yourself following this route.
Walk 10 paces straight ahead.
Turn right and walk 10 paces.
Turn left and walk 5 paces.
Turn left again, and this time walk 15 paces.
Turn left and walk 15 paces.
Turn left and walk 5 paces.
Draw a picture to describe your route and where you'll end up.
Go outside and follow the directions to check whether your prediction was correct. If it wasn’t, explain why.

Position – Treasure at Border Town Zoo
You will need:
pencils
a workbook or paper
Landmark co-ordinates:
When finding a landmark we look at the horizontal coordinate and then the vertical coordinate.
E.g. The house is located at (7, 2).
Write down what you can see at each of the co-ordinates in the table.

Buried treasure:
Think of a location to bury the treasure at Border Town Zoo.
Use directions such as north, east, south-east and north-west to describe the location in relation to other landmarks on the map.
Write your clues so that the person reading them has to read more than one clue to identify the correct location of the treasure.

food availability – how much and what type of food is around for an animal to eat
micro-habitat – a habitat is the environment where an animal lives. The habitat contains everything the animals needs to survive such as food and shelter. A micro-habitat is a small area, so your neighbourhood can be considered a micro-habitat.
monitoring – watching, observing, recording information
preening – when a bird tidies and cleans its feathers with its beak.

Watch the video and then survey the birds in your local area. Remember to:
sit outside if possible, otherwise somewhere near a window
set a timer for 10 minutes
use the images of the birds above and tally each time you see one of the birds on your table
record birds not on the table under 'other'.

This project aims to engage the public and keen bird watchers to report sightings using the Big City Birds app or website. Their whereabouts, behaviours, communal roosts and nest sites are of interest to researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Taronga Conservation Society Australia and the University of Sydney.
