Did we disconnect from nature?
For long, we have discussed how to avoid ecological catastrophe and re-boost nature. Many projects and initiatives have been put in place, some with success, and some with shallow results. We demand from our politicians and corporations, more sustainability, less pollution, and natural degradation. And yet, while we do this, we seem to understand ourselves as being detached from nature and not part of it. Somewhere along the line, we dissociated ourselves from it. We divorced.
It appears that most of contemporary society come to view itself as an independent entity from nature. Why? Has humanity placed itself on some high, untouchable throne? Have we forgotten that this idea of dissociation is false and that we live in a close symbiosis with nature because we are part of it? We cannot survive without life! Life, cannot live without life.
Not only does society pursue this removed status, but we have come to treat our natural surroundings in general as ‘natural resources’. Nature, for us, has become a sort of commodity. Something that can be traded, changed, or commercialized. We have erased entire ecosystems in the name of progress.
This new MuseOn exhibit, demands from us a mental pause. It is an opportunity for us to reconsider who we are in relation to every single other living thing on this planet. It pushes us to dare to dream of a future that is anything but dystopian! So, ask yourself: what is a future you want? And how can you/we get there? The exhibit aims to pose these questions, shift mindsets, and perhaps make us understand that we belong to a larger family than we previously thought while inviting positive action from all.
