It’s everywhere.
In the fizzy drinks, in trees, in car tires, in A LOT of industrial and manufactured goods. It's in the transportation and energy industry, in diamonds, and even in your body. Carbon, element 6 on the periodic table, is both a blessing and, through human activity, has become a huge hazard due to its by-products, like CO2.
Our creativity and industrial prowess seem nearly limitless, and we have developed beautifully because of it. However, progress comes at an increasingly high environmental cost. The present condition can absolutely seem dire, after all, carbon emissions are the key problem with climate change. Furthermore, even if all countries somehow are able to zero emissions, we will not be able to keep global temperatures from rising above the considered 'safe' levels. Recent IPCC reports indicate that in order for us to reach a safe global warming target, reducing emissions will not be enough. We will also have to engineer a portfolio of ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere. This has all the characteristics of a herculean effort and will make many feel hopeless.
However here is where the new MuseOn exhibit proposes to probe if there may not only be hope for the environment, but also a thriving opportunity in the carbon future. Are we facing a ‘cup half full’ instead of a ‘cup half empty reality’? We will investigate how we can flip a serious problem into a solution. The technologies to remove carbon from the air are quickly maturing. And the portfolio of different approaches to carbon removal and storage is also multiplying. Not to mention that the demand for clean, carbon-based products is increasing. Soon there may be a lot of carbon that has been sequestered in one way or another. So the question really is; what are we going to do about all that carbon? Is there a market? Is it legitimate? Is it certified and under a common global regulatory framework? Or are we in its infancy, like if we were wading through the lawlessness of a bad spaghetti western movie town?
So will we be able to literally make money, WHILE saving the planet?
Join us in this investigation where we will meet our new host, Dennis Edward Andrew Lloyd, better known as Mr. D.E.A.L., who will guide us to explore this curious carbon market!
