Inertia means the tendency for something to do nothing or remain unchanged. So, in a sense; things will keep on doing what they're doing... How does this apply to the idea of 'Less'? With so many reasons for us to focus on positive change, what is keeping us from acting? Don't we want a better world? Don't we want pollution, waste, corruption, wars and so many more things to become distant facts of the past?

Social inertia is basically the opposite of social change. It's how we resist changing our ways, either because we resist the effort the change will require, or people are reluctant to give up daily habits. Beating social inertia is not easy, and requires a persistent effort by large portions of the population.

It's a very straight path from social inertia and change. Most of us know what must be done in order to make a difference in our environment and guarantee stable living conditions for all creatures. But to do this will require a deep change from all parts of society, government, economy, and industry. Deep change is often discouraged by inertia. Societies can seek out plans that can lessen the stress of change, and plan for better futures.
