Unit 7: Grade 3 Lessons

Students use directional language to move a dog from Start to Finish on a grid. In pairs, students write a code to move an arrow from Start to Finish, avoiding obstacles along the way. To consolidate, students discuss the types of codes that are more straightforward and those that are more complicated.

Students are introduced to loops to show repeated steps in a dance. In groups, students create their own dance, then record the steps using loops. Students trade dances with another group and try each other’s dance. To consolidate, students share examples of loops found in real life.

In this Mathology Little Book, Cam’s day goes from fun to fascinating when she leaves certain decisions to chance. Follow her adventure to see what happens.

Students are introduced to an input-output machine. They then use the machine to create patterns and record them in a table and on a hundred chart. To consolidate, students discuss the patterns on the hundred chart and how they relate to skip-counting and repeated addition.

Together, students look at a repeating pattern to identify the 2 changing attributes, the pattern in each attribute, and the pattern core. They represent the core with letters and predict what would come next. In pairs, students examine 4 repeating patterns with 2 attributes changing. To consolidate, students share the strategies they used to identify the two attributes that were changing and the pattern core, then talk about how pairs of patterns are alike and how they are different.
