This activity focuses on translating repeating patterns in a variety of ways. To start, the class is shown a few patterns with the same letter core, and students discuss how the patterns are alike and how they are different. Students are introduced to the pattern circle and its colours through a First Nations story. In pairs, students place their game piece on a letter core, use the core to create patterns, then compare the patterns. To consolidate, students discuss how they created different patterns for the same core, and how a repeating pattern can be shown in many different ways.
This activity focuses on predicting an element in repeating patterns. To start, students look at a geometric and numeric repeating pattern, identify the core of each, then decide what would come next. Then, in pairs, students predict what shape/number would appear in a certain position in the pattern, then continue the pattern to check. As a class, students share the strategies they used to make and check their predictions.
This activity focuses on describing the likelihood of an event. To start, students talk about the probability of different weather events occurring, including raining jelly beans, then discuss some words that mathematicians use when they talk about chance. In pairs, students consider a series of events and decide how likely they are to occur. Students use the language of probability to describe the chance of each event happening. To consolidate, students talk about how they made their decisions, with a focus on reasoning. As a class, a word wall of the vocabulary of chance is created.
This is a series of 5 lessons, anchored in well known fairy tales, that invite students to learn pseudocoding through simple movements related to spatial reasoning.
This is a series of three lessons, anchored in barnyard characters, that invite students to progress from using directional and positional language and physical movement to pseudocoding with numbers and arrows.
