1)How is it possible for a number with lots of 7s in it to be less than a number with lots of 3s in it? Explain.
Sample Response
It is possible for the 7s are only in low place values, like ones and tens and the 3s are high place values, like hundred and thousands. For example, 1177 is less than 3311.
2) The numbers _ 3 2 _ and 41_ _ are not much closer together than 1 _ 4 9 and _ 3 8 5. What might the missing digits be? Explain.
Sample Response
The numbers could be 4321 and 4199 and 1549 and 1385 since they are about 125 and 160 apart. OR The numbers could be 3329 and 4100 and 1549 and 2385 since they are about 775 and 800 apart.

Discuss the following question as a whole class:
A number that contains the digits 2 and 5 is greater than a number with digits 7, 8, and 9. How is that possible?
Sample Response
It is possible if that number with 2 and 5 has more digits (e.g. 2105 compared to 789) OR It is also possible if the number with 2 and 5 is the whole number but the one with 7, 8, and 9 is a decimal less than 10, such as 7.89. OR it is possible if the 7,8,9 are on the right of one number, but 2 and 5 are on the left of the other number (e.g. 2500 compared to 1789).
