In this lesson, students create a rating scale to help them evaluate and choose DPA activities for their class. They engage in the process of mathematical modelling by working with others to identify assumptions, create a model (their rating system) and then using and revising that model.
In this mathematical modelling task from “Make Math Moments”, students investigate the two types of division through the exploration of tourist attractions in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Students will explore the number of passengers per car, and the total number of cars on the Ferris wheel through partitive and quotative division.
This lesson helps to explain what variables are and how we can use them in many different ways. The idea of variables isn't an easy concept to grasp, so we recommend allowing plenty of time for discussion at the end of the lesson.
In this task students will plan for enough popcorn to serve their class and/or their school including families during family movie night. The mathematics used focuses on estimation, and multiplication and division of whole numbers. Students must also communicate mathematically by providing a plan that can be used in other sharing situations.
