Algebra, Coding and the MTH1W Classroom: Where do we Start? (Part 1)
This hands-on session will introduce participants to Scratch as a coding environment. We will introduce basic coding concepts, review the coding concepts from grades 7 & 8, and explore ready-made lessons that can be used to get started with coding in your class.
Algebra, Coding and the MTH 1W Classroom: Where do we go next? (Part 2)
This hands-on session will continue to explore Scratch as a coding environment, but we will dig into how coding supports student learning of algebraic concepts. By the end of this session, participants will create a 3 part math lesson where students exercise computation thinking to decompose coding challenges, read code to predict outcomes, adjust code to changing circumstances and create their own code.
Mathematical Modelling Tasks in a De-streamed Math Class
This session will explore the new overall expectation of mathematical modelling. What is it? What does it look like in a classroom? We will briefly discuss some modelling ideas connected to the new MTH1W course, then participants will collaboratively build a modelling task they can use in their classrooms.
