Hero's Journey

The Hero's Journey is a popular story archetype. This means it follows a familiar pattern with predictable stages. In the Hero's Journey, also known as a Quest or Monomyth, a hero or team of heroes will go through each of the stages below.

1- Home

At the beginning of the Hero's Journey, we find the hero at home, assumedly safe and ignorant in their world and usually not yet considered a hero or anyone of importance.

2 - Call to Adventure

In the second stage of the Hero's Journey, the hero is either called upon or suddenly finds themself faced with a conflict that will require them to be more than they though they could.

3 - Supernatural Aid (Meeting the Mentor)

In the third stage of the quest, the hero is confronted by a mentor or supernatural entity who trains, gifts, and/or guides them on their upcoming journey.

4 - Crossing the Threshold

Eventually, the hero either accepts the quest or refuses the call (but gets thrown into it anyway). Either way, they leave their home and cross into the land of the unknown.

5 - Road of Trials

Along the way, the hero faces many tests and challenges, but as they overcome each one, they become a stronger and better person who is more prepared to face their destiny.

6 - The Abyss

At the climax of the story, the hero faces their ultimate test, the reason they went on this journey in the first place. This is when their hope is gone yet they must face their biggest fear.

7 - Resurrection

(Reward)

Upon defeating evil, the hero climbs out of the abyss and realizes what they must sacrifice in order to be a hero. They are thus reborn and rewarded for their bravery.

8 - Return Home

At last, the hero returns to their home victorious. They now have wisdom and experience to share with their community and to be prepared for the next quest that requires a hero.
