Adults are not the only ones who experience trauma. Many teens have been through serious traumas in their lives as well. In fact, studies show that about 30% of teens have been through at least one trauma in their lives.

Types of Trauma

Common teen traumas include unsafe environments, separation from a parent, serious childhood illnesses, neglect, physical abuse, verbal abuse, and sexual abuse.

Signs of Trauma

While everyone reacts to trauma in their own way, some of the most common signs include sadness, anger, guilt, overreactivity, flashbacks, insomnia, relationship withdrawal, self-seclusion, immaturity, anxiety, and depression.

PTSD

PTSD is an acronym for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and is the most common type of mental illness associated with traumas. About 15% of traumatized teens later experience some form of PTSD. It is important that this illness is diagnosed and addressed by a qualified professional.
