Central Valley’s Got Spirit
by Annamarie Lyman
Homecoming is a popular American tradition that takes place in the fall of each school year. It is the time when the last home game of the football season will take place, and a semi-formal dance follows it the next day. While the game and dance surely are a cause for enthusiasm and anticipation, the students at Central Valley Academy were also bustling with excitement for the week leading up to the celebration of our team.
Spirit week ensued, starting with the ever popular PJ Day. Tuesday was Rhyme Without Reason Day. Students would grab a partner and dress in outfits with themes that rhymed but didn’t have anything to do with each other in the slightest. Some rhymes that were seen through the halls of the school were a surfer and construction worker, disco and a frat bro, and beach day and USA.
Next up was Royals vs. Rock Day. There were plenty of kings, queens, and Kiss singers around the building. Following that was Halloween Day, so everyone who wanted to participate could show up in their costumes for Halloween. The end of the week and the day of the long awaited game was Thunder Day, of course, and the entire school showed their spirit in the pep rally in the large gym.
The student body cheered on the fall sports teams, participated in the “yell challenge” as well as the “table rowing” competition, and eagerly tried to grab for the t-shirts being launched from Mr. Paul’s t-shirt cannon. The winners of the Halloween hallway decorating contest were announced, as were the members of the Homecoming court, and the king and queen.
The Thunder went on to win the game later that evening, and the dance had what was likely record attendance, with a line that went down the hall and around the corner toward the large gym. There’s definitely no question that CVA has plenty of school spirit.
