What type of music has an effect on a kalanchoe's growth; instrumental or rock?
If I play instrumental music, then the kalanchoe will grow faster than with rock music.
Three orange kalanchoe plants
device where a rock playlist will play
device where a instrumental pop playlist will play
Gather materials
Put the kalanchoe near the sun but not directly under the sun
Water the plant with 2 cups of water daily so they don't become dry.
Play the music from the device; either the rock or instrumental music. Make sure you space out the plants so they don't hear the music.
Continue playing music for about an hour
Once you are done, record the growth
Repeat this process for 2-3 weeks
Look through the chart and see if the plant grew
Repeat the entire process for a total of 3 trials
Independent Variable: What type of music helps plants grow
Dependent Variable: Growth of the plant
Constants: The amount of water that I'm pouring, the amount of time I play each type of music, the plant stays rhe same
Control: The kalanchoe without music, it's just growing normally
This is all the information you collected in your experiment. Here you will place your pictures and graphs.

The kalanchoe with instrumental music grew faster. The plant seemed to like the soft vibrations that the instrumental music gave.
What type of music has an affect on kalanchoes growth; instrumental or rock? My hypothesis was that instrumental music would help a kalanchoe growth faster. It turned out to be true. The kalanchoe grew faster than with rock and no music. The kalanchoe with the rock music wasn’t growing much. It shocked me a bit since I thought it would grow. I played the music for around an hour everyday, sometimes during the day or at night.
The purpose of my project is to find out if plants have an effect towards music. I wanted to find out because it can be useful if you don’t really have enough time or patience to watch some plants grow. I only tested it with kalanchoes but, in general, I think plants will like the music.
If I play instrumental music, then the kalanchoe will grow faster than with rock. This is because the plants like the rhythmic beat of music and start to grow faster. When I played the music, the plant would sometimes bend towards the speaker where I was displaying the music. My hypothesis was correct. The plants liked the instrumental music much more than the rock music. As you can see in my graph, the kalanchoes grew much faster than the plants with no music and rock music.
Some of the steps I did for my experiment were gathering my materials, puting the kalanchoes in the sun and watering them with two cups of water, then playing the music for about an hour, and finally recording the data. These steps helped me get organized and finish my project smoother.
There weren’t any problems when completing my project. I didn’t really have a set time that I would play the music so I did it at random times during the day or night. That was only for my first trial. The second and third trials, I put a specific time that I would play the music and it worked better than the first attempt.
The hard vibrations of the rock music started to slowly kill the kalanchoe. On the other hand, the soft vibrations of the instrument music helped the kalanchoe grow faster. The kalanchoe with no music grew normally, a bit slow but it grew.
This experiment could help people that don’t have patience to wait for some plants to grow. This experiment proves that plants really like instrumental music and grew to the beat of it. The plants can grow normally but faster to music. Just don’t use rock music as it can damage your plant a little.
This experiment can be used in day to day lives because it can help those who don't really have enough time to watch some plants grow. It can also help people that want their plants to grow a bit faster than normal.
