Dr. Byron McClure presented to CCS school psychologists and other support staff on February 7th, 2024. His presentation focused on the concept of deficit-thinking, showcasing its subtle yet pervasive presence in our educational systems and its counterproductive effects on student development and school culture. Dr. McClure showed the alternative to deficit-thinking by focusing on what's strong instead of what's wrong to better support a student's social and emotional development. This shift offers a fresh lens through which to view the unmet needs of the youth - not as unsolvable problems but as opportunities for actionable change. By the end of the session, school psychologists were energized, inspired, and able to walk away with a clear understanding of the importance of strength based practices and a roadmap for bringing them into their school communities.
