How do our experiences and personal connections with a text inform and extend our understanding of the text and the ideas, concerns and tensions within it?
What does effective and cohesive writing look like? How can we use texts written by others as a model for our own writing for various purposes, audiences and contexts?
Learning program & assessment:
Students make connections with, and explore the vocabulary, text structure, language features and ideas in, a text.
Students produce a series of texts which they have crafted for specific purposes and which demonstrate an understanding of effective and cohesive writing.
Students describe decisions made in the process of crafting their texts.

How can we use inferential reading to deepen our understanding and open up possible meanings in texts?
How does the historical context, and social and cultural values, as well as our own cultural knowledge, experiences and understanding of the world, help us to extend our analytical exploration of a text?
How do authors and presenters of written and spoken media texts use language and visual language to position their audience?
How can we use argument, persuasion, and oral language to position an audience on a topical issue?
Learning program & assessment:
Students explore and analyse how vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas in a text construct meaning.
Students analyse a range of persuasive texts on a contemporary issue, including how language is used to position audiences.
Students research, plan, write and record or present their point of view on a topical issue.

What is involved in creating a text, including issues of purpose, audience, structure, language, voice and style?
How do authors of media texts use language to position their audience?
Learning program & assessment:
Students read and respond creatively to selected texts.
Students read, analyse and interpret the ideas and values in selected texts.
Analyse and compare the use of argument and persuasion in media articles on a topical issue.

How can our reading of texts explore and illuminate shared meaning and connection between them?
How does our analysis and interpretation of texts deepen our understanding of ideas, issues and themes that reflect the world and human experiences?
How can we use argument, persuasion, and oral language to position an audience on a topical issue?
Learning program & assessment:
Students produce, through discussion, planning and writing, analyses of a text pair which explore how the texts deal with similar or related ideas, issues or themes from different perspectives to reflect particular values.
Students research, plan, write and record or present their point of view on a topical issue.
