Well we are already mid-January!
Last week the children did very well getting back into routines after the Christmas Break. We reviewed our Fundations letters and sounds and finished our unit test. All children did very well at naming and recognizing the sounds of all the letters. The test did show that a lot need more practice with printing the letters properly. Our Fundations program continues to practice printing as we go through the units but it would be very helpful to continue practicing printing the letters at home using the verbal pathways that were sent home.
Tomorrow we start Unit 2. In their folders there is a letter for Unit 2. Today we began what we call tapping and blending. We do this to read three letter words. I will be sending home more information on that next week. In this unit, we will also review the uppercase letters. Most students would have been introduced to uppercase letters at home and preschool.
We also started our reading groups today. I am sending home a note about our kindergarten reading program as well. For those of you who have had older children go through the school system our reading program has changed a little as we move to align with the skills we are teaching in Fundations. Homework will look a little different then in the past. This week I will send home a sheet with four words to read each day. Students should tap the sounds with their fingers and then blend the sounds together faster to say the word. As the weeks go on I will start to send some sentences or books for homework.
In math, we are working on the number 7. At home you can be practicing printing the numbers up to 7 and practicing counting groups up to 7.
We will be going on a field trip with all of English Kindergarten on February 3rd. We will be going bowling and then walking to the Confederation Library for some fun stations. Please keep your eye out for a permission form.
Dates to remember.
January 27 Family Literacy Day- Ms.Amy is requesting photos of your family engaging in literacy activities (Reading a book together, making words with magnetic letters etc.) In the past she accepted digital copies but this year she is asking for a physical copy of the photo
February 3rd Field Trip to Bowling (Storm date February 10th).
Have a nice week,
