Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone had a good weekend. It was great to have everyone back at school today. I hope that our class is over the cold/flu season.
Literacy:
This week we are moving into Unit 3 week 2 in Fundations. This unit will mainly be a review and practice of tapping to read and write consonant-vowel-consonant words as well as introducing what they call "trick words." We have been introducing a few sight words but trick words are words that you can't tap. You just have to remember them. "Trick words" will begin in week 3. Continue to review sounds at home as now it becomes important to know the sounds automatically to tap and blend them to make words. I sent home the parent letter for Unit 3. There are some activities that you can do at home to practice these skills.
Reading: Over the last two weeks I have been testing skills during our small group time to get ready for report cards. I hope that even with a possible storm day tomorrow we will be able to get back to our small group lessons for decoding and reading short sentences. That said it will most likely be Wednesday or Thursday that students come home with additional "reading" homework.
Writing: We are finishing up our unit on procedural writing and will be spending some time writing about our families in the next week or two.
Math: This week we will be working on subitizing (quickly looking at a group and saying the number without counting). We will also be starting a unit on measurement. Today we talked about comparing things that are short and tall. At home pick an object and ask students to find something that is taller then the object and shorter then the object.
