Trip to Nelson  Mandela Capture Site

The Grade 5 Social Science curriculum is centred around explorations of the African continent; namely South Africa, its history and its heritage. This term we started off learning about important figures in South African history – namely Nelson Mandela. We visited the Nelson Mandela Capture Site for the day, where we delved into the former president’s life. A real humbling experience studying the television footage beamed up onto the walls of the museum, looking at a multitude of photos of Mandela’s daily life and the important people in it, as well as walking the timeline of significant events in his life on our way down to the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ artwork. We all realised how many sacrifices were made by so many people to ensure that we could all be together, standing side by side as friends.
