Trip to Nyala Pans

The teachers were probably more excited than the children as we knew the adventure that awaited us at Nyala Pans. We couldn’t wait for the children to meet the camp counselors, see the tents we were going to sleep in and ride the white water of the river.

On arrival, we were welcomed with the usual happy faces and the beauty of the valley. Nyala Pans delivered all that we hoped for. The weather was superb and even the chill of the evening didn’t dampen our night walk and sunset soccer matches. The food was delicious and we even enjoyed dessert at lunch time! The children learnt orienteering skills which they succeeded at, they were then able to collect all the ingredients necessary for them to make us the delicious potjies for our dinner.

The highlight was definitely our water and mud day. The last rains had left lots of mud to climb through and the river was just right for us to raft down as well as use the “gheko’s” if you wanted a bit more speed. A 5m courage jump into the river resulted in screams of all types of glee, fear and fun. The adrenaline junkies even went back for more than one jump!

The Grade 4s were little stars. Some overcame a few fears, made new friends and just had so much fun all while being kind to each other and making sure that everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you Nyala Pans for a trip to remember.
