The Convention on the Rights of the Child brings together a range of rights that all children aged under 18 are entitled to, no matter who they are or where they are born. These rights ensure that all children are given the support they need to develop and reach their potential and are protected from harm. Governments across the world have signed up to the CRC and have promised to make the rights within the CRC a reality for children in their country and a number of articles specifically mention what governments must do to make rights happen.
Article 1 makes clear that everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights in the Convention.
Article 4 states that governments must do all they can to make sure every child can enjoy their rights by creating systems and passing laws that promote and protect children’s rights.
Article 41 states that if a country has laws and standards that go further than the present Convention, then the country must keep these laws.
Next week we will be learning more about Article 12 – respect for the views of the child
Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right applies at all times, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.
This term our topic is the Victorians. Today our Learning Intention was to find out which countries were part of the British Empire and be able to locate these on a map.
Megan and Alfie introduce next week's Article.
Article 42- Knowledge of the Rights
Governments must actively work to make sure children and adults know about the Convention.
The Scottish Parliament has unanimously agreed to incorporate the UNCRC into Scots Law. When this happens, decision-makers MUST take rights into account and children will then be able to challenge decisions in court if they feel rights are denied. The Bill is a milestone on Scotland’s journey towards making rights real for every child.
Welcome to a new year. Primary 5/6 have had a fantastic first day! There is plenty of hard work ahead of us and lots to look forward to. I have put together some information on aspects of Primary 5/6 and what is expected of the pupils.
Homework
Homework will normally be given out on a Thursday/Friday and will be due in the following Thursday.
Pupils should
Ø complete all homework on time
Ø ask their parent/guardian or teacher for help before their homework is due in (Thursday is too late)
Ø not get stressed or upset if they do not understand something – ask for help J
Ø in exceptional circumstances where homework cannot be completed a signed and dated note from the responsible adult should be handed to the teacher as soon as possible
Check list - each time you complete homework you should check that you can answer YES to all these statements
ü I have done my very best work
ü My work is neat, legible and I have used my best handwriting
ü I have numbered and spaced out my work as required
ü I have read over my work and checked that I have answered all of the questions to the best of my ability
ü I have asked a parent/carer to sign my jotter or homework forecast grid.
ü I am proud of my effort and work
Primary 5/6 will be given some of these, if not most activities each week;
· Mental Maths activity
· Maths activity (this is linked to what we are working on in class)
· Reading
· Spelling
· Language activities
· Other Curricular Topic/task
A homework forecast will be given out every 4 weeks. It will clearly display which homework has been set and given out for the week beginning e.g 22nd of August. This is also to help your child plan ahead.
All homework must be signed for by an adult, preferably on their forecast homework grid in each box and handed in on Thursday.
PE
P.E will be on a Monday and Friday. All pupils will need to come appropriately dressed on the day for PE or have with them a change of clothes. Please make sure your child has indoor shoes, as we head into the autumn/winter months we will be using the hall for PE. This will help keep the floors clean and provide your child with supportive footwear while taking part in PE activities indoors.
Dress Code
A reminder the school dress code is as follows;
· Black/grey/navy trousers/skirt/pinafore
· Blue school sweatshirt
· Whit school polo shirt
· A change of footwear
· Shoe bag- this will help us avoid the mix up of shoes.
Google Classroom/Muirtown Website
Please keep an eye on the Muirtown Website and our P5/6 page, I keep this updated with photos and videos of what has been happening in our classroom. Likewise with the Google Classroom, I will keep this populated with any reminders and things that are happening.
Chromebooks
P6 only will be provided with a Chromebook and charger. We ask kindly that you invest in a Chromebook case to keep them safe, especially as they take them between home and school. We ask that they are charged at home at night so they are ready to use in class the following day. Please take the time to look over and discuss with your child the Chromebook agreement, sign and return it to the school by Friday19th of August.
Thank you for taking the time to read the information provided. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at the school or by email; emma.williams@charlestonacademy.org.uk
