Co-curricular Activities

Your Sixth Form life will be as satisfying as you make it. There are all sorts of opportunities on offer and we hope that, during your time with us, you will continue to develop skills already underway and also try your hand in areas new to you.

Sports

There is a full programme of inter-school sports fixtures for senior teams throughout the year with matches and meetings taking place on Wednesday afternoons as well as on Saturdays. The school has an enviable reputation nationally in many sports and we shall be more than pleased if you have talents and work ethic to offer to ensure a continuation of these successes.

Music

The school has a long standing tradition of musical excellence. There is a School Choir, open to allcomers, which sings (often in conjunction with the High School) major choral works such as Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem and Carmina Burana. There is also a Chamber Choir which tackles even more ambitious material. There is a large Swing Band and a Symphony Orchestra, both of these groups include players from Dr Challoner’s High School. There are chamber groups, a jazz band and generally lots of opportunities for solo or ensemble performances. Make sure the Director of Music knows what you can offer.

Drama

The school stages several dramatic productions each year. Major plays by significant playwrights alternate with ambitious musicals but there are also occasional other opportunities in more intimate productions. Again, make yourself known to the member of staff in charge of drama. Students on the Theatre Studies course will be involved in productions as part of their studies.

Dr Challoner’s Culture Club

As a Year 12 student you are invited to join Dr Challoner’s Culture Club, a group of thirty-six people who, for an annual subscription, make one visit, usually to London, each half term. These visits include a play, a concert, an art gallery, an opera, a musical and a restaurant meal. Membership is very popular. First come, first served!

Trips

The school runs a wide variety of trips at different times. Many of these are arranged and publicised through the academic department concerned, while others are launched through assemblies. Please see the educational visits administrator for further information.

Community Service

There are always people outside the school who need our help in various ways, whether this means serving Christmas lunch to Senior Citizens, helping disabled children to swim or assisting with academic study lower down the school. Sixth Formers find all sorts of opportunities to give people a helping hand. We hope that you will wish to use some of your own time to help the community in some way. Sustained commitment to other people can be highly satisfying.

Debating

This is an area where Dr Challoner’s has earned very special national acclaim. An active group of Sixth Formers is largely at the helm and involve themselves in debating at all levels. See Mr Spenceley for more information.

Religious Faith

There are various groups which meet informally on a regular basis to share their thoughts and beliefs or to worship together. For details of existing groups, or to organise such a group, please talk to the Director of Sixth Form.

Other Opportunities

There are a number of other opportunities you may be interested in. These include the Medics, Law and Engineering Societies, Young Enterprise and the student journalism team. If a particular interest of yours is not catered for, please talk to the Sixth Form pastoral team about how you might be able to pursue it.
