Project Overview
Sixth Grade Scholars have the opportunity to partner with The Trust for Public Land and Park Pride to design a schoolyard for the Centennial Academy Community. This schoolyard will create more green space for scholars and residents along with providing recreation and exercise opportunities. Scholars will work on the design project over the course of two years by conducting interviews with the community, learning about environmental justice and access to green space, and determining which items should be added to the schoolyard space.

Over the course of two sessions, 6th grade scholars learned about the driving question and the scope of the Atlanta Communities Schoolyard Design Project in a virtual presentation conducted by Park Pride, The Trust for Public Land, and the Greening Youth Foundation. They also explored the topic of environmental justice and access to green space and clean water for all residents in our Centennial Academy Community.

Environmental Justice: Deforestation Considerations
Sixth grade scholars created infographics to share the importance of protecting the environment as they learned about deforestation and the benefits of having green space in their community.

Environmental Justice: Access to Clean Water
Sixth grade scholars focus on the importance of hydration stations throughout the schoolyard. They investigate hydrology and the importance of access to clean water in their community and around the world.

Community Considerations
Sixth grade scholars created a written proposal advocating for a new schoolyard area for Centennial Academy scholars and community members to use to improve the quality of life for every member.
