Project Overview
Seventh grade scholars were chosen to join the news team at WCEN as a consulting medical correspondent on the weekly 5-minute segment “Science Matters” . As a member of the team, their job was to inform the public about important and current science topics, as well as, respond to viewer questions. The following question was received from a viewer with a family member who is suffering from a genetic disease.

Recently my family and I read about what scientists are doing with gene editing. My brother suffers from sickle cell anemia, a genetic disorder which can cause him pain, fatigue, and many hospitalizations.

Entry Event
Seventh grade scholars viewed the trailer, My Sister's Keeper, a movie about a young girl who needs to receive genes from her younger sister as a treatment option for her Leukemia.
Our Process
Seventh grade scholars used interactive notebooks and videos to learn about heredity and genetics. Scholars also received a virtual visit from a medical physician where they learned how doctors diagnose a variety of genetic diseases and which treatments are provided.
