Driving Question: How can we as producers create an emergency signal to alert others of dangers in our community?
Driving Question: How can we as producers create an emergency signal to alert others of dangers in our community?
In this project, students investigate light and sound by looking at different instruments/tools that make noise to alert others of danger in the world. Students have been learning about light and sound, engaging in interactive field-trips to view the uses of light and sound, and reading informational text about light and sound to further understand this topic. Students use their Success Skills to communicate, collaborate, think critically, and to showcase their work ethic in this unit. Students use their SEL (Social- EmotionalLearning) skills to work, solve problems, and to engage in the daily lessons. Students were involved in organizing and classifying light and sound objects.
S - Scholars explored and investigated with light and sound in science, music, and theatre arts.
T - Scholars learned about different types of technologies that can be used to alert people of dangers.
E - Scholars crafted and designed their own prototypes of their emergency alert devices and systems.
A -Scholars integrated art with our Arts Partner Mr. Ato to gain ideas about how to use recyclable materials to design and create their emergency alarm devices.
M - Scholars investigated high and low pitch of sounds in music class. Scholars are able to differentiate between high and low sounds and what constitutes a warning sound (alerts, alarms, etc.).
Scholars viewed the emergency drill video from Centennial Academy and discussed the details about what they noticed about the reactions to the Emergency Signal.
Exploring Emergency Signals
Scholars explore different types of emergency signals and what they mean.
Guest Speaker
Mr. Ato provided scholars with a presentation on how to use recycled and repurposed materials to create. He also shared artistic technique with scholars as they prepared to use recycled materials to create their emergency signals.
With some help from our Performing Arts teacher, Ms. Hayes, our first grade scholars received breaking news of a horrible event that needed their immediate attention and engineering expertise. Check it out!
