Augmentative Communication Specialist

Augmentative and Alternative Communication, also referred to as AAC or Aug Comm, is a form of communication other than oral speech. AAC users communicate using a variety of methods to express themselves. People with severe speech or language problems may use gestures, writing, picture symbols or communication devices to communicate their ideas, wants and needs. We have multiple students who use a variety of AAC systems. They range from single button switches used for requesting to very complex communication programs on a tablet used to participate in classroom discussions. There is a Speech-Language Pathologist in our district who focuses primarily on AAC and either works with students directly or consults with the building Speech-Language Pathologist depending on the student's individual communication skills. We want every student to be able to express himself and communicate effectively no mater what method is used.

I completed a B.S. in Communication Disorders and M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Minot State University in my home state of North Dakota.  I have worked in 3 different districts between WY and CO since graduating. During this time, I have always had some sort of special population program in a building I served - Autism, English Language Learners, Multiple Abilities, or a combination.  I am thankful to have been given the experiences of working with a variety of complex language needs.

I love helping students find "their voice" and be able to communicate with their world!  Language affects how we interact with each other, how we understand, and how we express ourselves.  It is so rewarding when children can express themselves instead of acting out or shutting down in frustration.  I also love teaching that communication doesn't have to be verbal speech. I encourage students to use words, pictures, sign language and communication devices to find their easiest way to communicate.

I enjoy spending time with my loved ones; including my family, friends and 2 crazy dogs.  My husband and I enjoy spending time at a lake, hiking with the dogs, cooking and watching football together.
