The final month of the school year

As you can imagine, when you work with children, there are many proud moments for a teacher. There are the daily moments when something clicks in a child's head and they get it, whatever it might be. There are the moments when a former student walks into the school for their TY  work experience and  asks about their favourote primary school teacher. Then there's the big events - the graduations, the winter concerts, and so on. This week was another proud moment for our school when twelve of our students travelled to Brussels to visit the EU parliament and to talk about the work they've been doing on active travel and sustainability in Carlow Town. As you'll see from the picture above, they are rightly proud of themselves too! Huge thanks are due to Mark who has been leading the drive for getting the student voice out to our public representatives over the last few years. Everyone is very proud.

Back at base, we are getting ready for the final few weeks of lovely school year. Over the next while, we'll have lots of school tours, a sports day and a graduation ceremony. In between, children will be out and about. As I'm writing this message, our 3rd, 4th and 5th classes are playing a GAA blitz and our 2nd classes are in VISUAL for the first event of the Carlow Arts Festival.

Since I was in touch the last time, we've had a wonderful month in school, the highlight being our Open Day, organised by Emma and the fantastic Parents' Association. I'm sure you'll agree it was a perfect day and we were so happy to have so many people attend.

In this newsletter, we'll be sharing some more news for the next few weeks ahead and I'm sure there will be many proud moments throughout. Until next time, keep happy, safe and learning

Simon

Clothing Bank

The school has added a clothing bank to the premises. If you have any old clothes you'd like to donate, please feel free to use it. Please make sure to follow the rules and only access the site during the school's opening hours.

Television Opportunity!

Would your child like to be on RTE's opular children's TV show - Let's Find Out? Our school has been chosen to take part and RTE are hosting auditions for children for our school. They can only select a certain number and it is RTE who will be making the decisions. Here is what they need for now:

Students to send thems in videos so they can select which 4 pairs will be doing the experiments. Deadline to send videos in is Friday 16th June.  Ideally, they’d like children from classes 1st-4th and preferably siblings or cousins. They will let the successful students know in August- Early September.

Here is the application form for the parents to fill in and upload the video : https://forms.gle/7jUSjefCagQV9W8fA

Aldi Rugby Sticker Competition

We were delighted to be one of the runner-up schools in the Aldi Rugby Sticker promotion.  The school won €5,000 which will be used for sport equipment. We are going to be resurrecting our basketball hoops so please drive carefully, once they're installed!

Active Week

A big thanks to Laura and Teresa for organising a fantastic Active Week in the school. Children got to try over half a dozen different sports and activities throughout the week, from athletics to tennis to zumba.

Active Cycle

Carlow Educate Together was again at the forefront of active travel with the first ever school bike bus in the county. Children were able to cycle to school on their bikes taking in different stops alogn the town. A big thanks to Ciara for organsing the route. We'd love to make this a regular event but it will need parents/guardians to run it. If you're interested, please get in touch.

Senior Infants also took on Bike Week! Many children in the class learned to cycle for the first time.  5th Class also had a cycle along the Barrow Track.

Visit from Maltese Ambassador

The school was one of two schools in Carlow Town to be visited by the Maltese Ambassador to Ireland, Giovanni Buttigeig. The ambassador met the student council along with many of the children in the school. He commented on the school saying that it was one of the most progressive schools he has ever visited. (Another proud moment!)

Africa Day and International European Union Day

We were delighted to send some of our classes to these important events in Carlow Town. Africa Day celebrates ur African community living in Carlow.  International European Union Day celebrated the 50th anniversary of Ireland's entry into the EU.

Street Art

Inspired by a recent visit to the Waterford Walls, some of our 6th class  created this wonderful piece of art on the right.

School Reports and Class Allocations

School reports will be published on the last week of term along with next year's class allocations. You will need access to the Aladdin App to view  your child's report. You can do this by downloading the app to your device or accessing it through aladdin.ie.
