Representing Canadian Academy at an interschool event, such as APAC, GIN, MUN, and others, is a privilege. Many students report that their participation in such events significantly enriches their CA experience.
The school places considerable trust in each travelling student to abide by school rules as well as specific guidelines when travelling, including curfew and other behavioural expectations. A breach of such guidelines, expectations and/or any action that might jeopardize that student or others' safety, or negatively affect the reputation of the school would result in the student losing eligibility to represent the school at any such event for one year and/or more significant consequences including expulsion from Canadian Academy.
The CA Activity programme, in conjunction with regional conference schools, has established a code of conduct for students participating in activities at home, away, or abroad. For the students it attempts to identify those positive behavioral traits that should be exhibited while representing school, family and self. The code also identifies consequences for inappropriate behavior. Naturally, such a code cannot identify every situation and it is the belief that common sense, alongside positive behavior, will be exhibited when on school representation. The purpose of this code of conduct is to encourage students to engage in healthy and responsible behaviors. Behaviors which are hazardous to the health and safety of a student and those around him or her cannot be condoned.
RULES INFRACTION: When a student commits an infraction while at an activity relating to alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, cheating, deceit, flagrant curfew violations, and violations of the “off limits” areas, as well as aiding and abetting any of the above, the following shall apply:
The student may no longer participate in that activity.
If the activity is away or abroad, the student will be sent home at parents’ expense if it is feasible to do so.
The student’s school will also apply the appropriate disciplinary action based on the infraction.
Should a student commit an infraction, then the student will be excluded for one calendar year from all events including the same convention the following year.
If at any time a student is suspended from further competition or involvement in an event, then the only results affected will be those happening after a decision is made on the infraction. Results prior to that decision will stand.
Note: (i) With reference to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, this section includes using or possessing or supplying or selling. (ii) Should several players from a team be affected then all games must be continued with as per the schedule, provided there are sufficient players to legally continue play. (iii) Should a home stay family not wish to continue providing housing then the host school convention director together with the administrator of the student concerned should help facilitate a housing alternative.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR:
Curfew Times: 10:00 P.M. Note: If the final activity ends after or less than one hour before the established curfew time on any night, the curfew will then be one hour after the end of that activity.
Telephone Checks: Telephone checks for all participants, including host school participants, will be made by each school on each night of the convention to enforce the curfew. Students and host families should be aware that second curfew calls might be made on any night of the event.
Enforcement: All coaches/sponsors, including the host schools are expected to enforce the rules and regulations.
If there is a suspected rules infraction, it should be reported immediately to the host tournament/convention director who will in turn notify the administrator of the school concerned as soon as is practically possible.
The administrator-in-charge, along with the host tournament/convention director, will confer, investigate, and make a decision on whether the infraction actually occurred. The decision will go directly to the Activities/Athletic Director and School Head of the school involved who in turn will impose the specific penalties.
If the Activities/Athletic Director and School Head are unaware of the situation, then the administrator-in-charge, along with the host tournament/convention director of the school involved will impose the penalties.
Note: if the coaches are found condoning the violation of the rules by team members or behaving improperly, they are to be reported to their respective AD or School Head.
CA values and encourages student participation in all activities, be they arts or athletic events. These all are educational opportunities that form an important component in the education of the well rounded student; however, as an accredited high school, we must ensure a healthy balance between course work and activities.
Only students who maintain a quarterly GPA of 2.0 and who have no failing grades in any subject in the previous or current quarter may participate in extracurricular activities. Please refer to the section on extracurricular eligibility in Academics.
Students should also plan their extracurricular activities within the school’s attendance policy. In order to comfortably meet the attendance requirement, no more than two major activities should be attempted each semester. For this purpose, a major activity is defined as one that requires the student to miss school due to participation or travel. Students may miss a maximum of 5 school days per season for sports travel and tournament participation.
To accommodate a special case, a student in good attendance and academic standing may appeal to the Principal to be allowed to participate in a third activity during the semester. Such students should have a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.0.
In order to help students and parents make informed decisions on activities, CA will publish a list of travel activities at the beginning of each school year.
Coaches/advisors of activities will e-mail a preliminary roster to all teachers at the beginning of the activity season. The information should include the names of students involved, the duration of the activity, and the dates and/or blocks the student will be missing school. It is the responsibility of teachers at this point to communicate any academic concerns or reservations they have about any student’s participation to the coach/ advisor and the Principal. All participants are expected to maintain passing grades in all courses during the activity season.
Two weeks before the students are scheduled to miss school for an activity, coaches/advisors should e-mail a reminder to teachers with a list of students involved. It is the responsibility of all students to meet with and discuss their academic expectations with teachers a week before the planned absence. Teachers then have the responsibility to inform these students of any academic expectations during their absence. Teachers may do this by directly informing each student or by a general posting of assignments on either the class white board, bulletin board, or an assignment web page. This information should also include the dates assignments are due. Depending on the assignments, teachers may insist that work be completed before the student leaves or may grant a reasonable time period for the students to complete the assignments on their return to CA.
It is the responsibility of individual students to record the assignments and due dates in their agenda books and show it to their coach/advisor. Coaches/advisors should remind students of their academic commitments and are encouraged to check on their progress, but it remains the student’s responsibility to ensure this information is received and recorded, and that all assignments are completed by the due dates. Students may not return from a trip with the excuse that they did not know what their academic responsibilities were.
Except in highly unusual circumstances approved by the Principal, a student must be in school on the day of any after school event/activity in order to take part in the event/activity (practice, game, rehearsal or performance). For this purpose, the student must be in school no later than 20 minutes after first period begins to be considered present for the day. Additionally, if a student checks out of school sick during the school day the student will not be allowed to return for any after school event or activity.
All student organizations have one or more faculty advisors. Over the years, advisors have developed materials and procedures to assist students in the organization of these activities. Please consult with your advisor for assistance and suggestions.
Student activity funds are for the benefit of the school and community and not for any individual nor for the pleasure of the fund raising organization itself. An advisor’s signature is necessary when withdrawing funds. All fundraising activities must be approved by both the advisor and our Director of Service. The funds of all club and class treasuries will be monitored by the advisors and Principal.
Student organizations who would like to use the school facilities must arrange this with their faculty advisor, Activities Director and have an acceptable number of faculty chaperones. Application for the use of facilities in the evenings or on weekends must be made early.
Students are welcome to put up posters which have been approved by their faculty advisor. To prevent damage, please only place posters on the designated hallway bulletin boards.
