A student’s grade level is determined at the time of admission to Canadian Academy. Ordinarily, students automatically move up to the next grade each year. The academic committee may, however, retain students who are on probation.
Students in Grade 6 study English, Humanities, Science, Mathematics, PE, Japanese or Spanish, Design, Art, Music and Drama.
Students in Grades 7 and 8 study English, Humanities, Science, Mathematics, PE, Japanese or Spanish, Design and Art. They choose a performing art (Drama, Choir, Orchestra or Band) in which to specialize.
G6-10 students enrolled in either English as an Additional Language (EAL) or Learning Support may be enrolled in a Skills class in place of one course (Design, Fine Arts, or Language).
G9-12 students must take at least 6 courses each year to be considered a full time student.
Details of all courses can be found in the Course Descriptions section of this handbook
All students graduate with a CA High School Diploma. Most of our students also elect to pursue the IB Diploma. The Counselor works with students and families in Grade 10 to determine and plan for the appropriate pathway based on the student's strengths and future plans.
A transcript is the official document which is forwarded any time a school or university needs a student’s official academic record. Unless there are fines or other obligations which remain outstanding, a reasonable number of transcripts will be sent to educational institutions or prospective employers for free. A School Profile is included with each transcript.
The transcript contains the names of all CA courses taken during grades 9 through 12 along with grades and credits earned. High school courses completed by middle school students are not included on the transcript.
Canadian Academy’s grading scale is as follows:
Grade Description
7 Excellent
6 Very Good
5 Good
4 Satisfactory
3 Poor
2 Failing
1 Failing
P Passing
INC Incomplete
NG No Grade
If, due to unavoidable absences, it is necessary to record an incomplete grade on a report card, the student, teacher, and principal must agree to a time frame in which the work will be completed. If the work is not made up by the agreed upon time, the grade will be changed to "NG".
Report cards, containing both grades and comments, are issued two times each year. Parents can check current grades online at any time by signing in to their PowerSchool account. Time is set aside each fall and spring for parent conferences.
Promotion
Students must earn a passing grade in 5.5 credits each year including 1 in English in order to be promoted into the next grade level. The final decision for promotion rests with the Principal.
A student may be placed on academic contract if s/he receives three or more grades of 3 or below, or one grade of 2 or below on a semester or final report. A meeting with the student, parent(s), Principal, and Counselor may be held to set specific goals for improvement. If improvement is not realized or if a student is on academic contract for three semesters, the student risks losing his/her place at CA.
Students must ordinarily be enrolled in a recognized secondary school for four years prior to graduation; however, students with exceptional circumstances may apply to graduate at the end of Grade 11 or midway through Grade 12. There is no tuition advantage for early graduation. Should early graduation be granted, the senior year’s tuition fee must be paid in full. Interested students should speak with their counselor to make certain it is in their best interest to pursue this option.
Students who would like to request permission to graduate early must submit a request in writing to the Headmaster.
Students wishing to graduate at the end of the junior year must make their request prior to selecting their junior year courses. Students wishing to graduate at the end of the first semester of the senior year must make such a request prior to selecting their senior courses.
A committee consisting of the Headmaster, the Principal and the student’s counselor will review each early graduation request. The decision will be based primarily upon the reasons behind the request and the student’s academic record. Grade appropriate English placement, and a good citizenship record are ordinarily required.
