Homework assignments are intended to be directly connected to what is being taught in class. Homework will not always be assigned. It will only be assigned if it is necessary to support student learning. One important skill that needs to be mastered at the middle school level is organization. Extended assessment tasks may take homework time over a number of days. For Grades 6-8 all homework will be written into the agenda book.
Grade 6 has a minimum homework approach. The intention is to maximise learning in the classroom and leave afternoon and evening time for sports, hobbies and work on extended tasks.
For the typical grade 7 or 8 student, assigned out of class work should not exceed more than 20 minutes of homework per meeting time.
To help middle school students develop their organizational skills, CA utilizes two tools:
A homework agenda book: It is used to record daily homework assignments, due dates for projects, and test dates for all subjects. All students will be given a CA Agenda from their teachers on the first day of school. Completion of homework assignments is the responsibility of the student.
Digital Assessment calendar: Teachers enter all summative assessment tasks and major ongoing deadlines on the assessment calendar. This can be found on schoology.
No student should have more than three summative assessments on one day. Students needing additional help to complete their assignments are encouraged to take the responsibility to communicate with their teachers. We recognise that not all students complete homework in the same time span.
Homework is given to students to reinforce and extend the material covered during class. For the typical grade 9 or 10 student, assigned out of class work should not exceed more than 30 minutes of homework per meeting time.
A typical grade 11 or 12 student might have one hour of out of class work per meeting time in each class (but will usually have less), with the understanding that IB DP courses may have more work during times such as IB DP internal assessment deadlines. If a student finds that homework for a particular class is consistently above these levels or is difficult to manage, this can be discussed with their teacher and advisor.
To support the development of effective organizational skills, CA uses two tools:
A homework agenda book (Grade 9): It is used to record daily homework assignments, due dates for projects, and test dates for all subjects. All students will be given a CA Agenda from their teachers on the first day of school. Completion of homework assignments is the responsibility of the student.
Digital Assessment calendar: Teachers enter all summative assessment tasks and major ongoing deadlines on the assessment calendar in schoology (or ManageBac for Pamoja courses).
No student should have more than three summative assessments on one day. Students needing additional help to complete their assignments are encouraged to take the responsibility to communicate with their teachers. We recognise that not all students complete homework in the same time span.
