The Health Office is located on the ground floor and is open each school day. A professional school nurse is available to offer first aid or health guidance, and to refer students to appropriate medical assistance.
Physical examinations are required of all students new to Canadian Academy. A health update is also requested at the beginning of each school year. Since education and health are closely entwined, up-to-date health records are necessary in monitoring the health of students so that the identification of potential problems and appropriate interventions can be made. To promote health and wellness and have students optimally benefit from the educational process, special consideration shall be given to such areas as disease prevention and immunizations, screening, and identification of students exhibiting high risk physical or social behaviors.
The administration of medication is monitored through the health office. Students bringing prescription or over the counter medications to school must coordinate the administration with the school nurse. Parents should advise the nursing staff of any medical concerns, including allergies to food or drugs. Students are discouraged from carrying medications with them since if they were to be accidentally lost, harmful consequences could result. With the permission of the nursing staff, some students are permitted to carry inhalers with them.
Students who become ill during the school day should report to the health office for assistance. Parents will be contacted as warranted by the severity of the situation. In circumstances where parents cannot be reached, CA will take necessary and appropriate actions. However, unless a students’ health record is complete and permission forms are signed and up-to-date, the nurse will not be able to administer any medications or provide services beyond basic first aid. Parents are asked to notify the nurse should a student develop a communicable disease, serious injury, or have an acute illness.
