• The designated administrator reports over the intercom, “This is an earthquake drill. I repeat, this is an earthquake drill. Follow emergency earthquake procedures until the drill is over.”
• If indoors, teachers should keep their students inside. While shielding their heads with their hands and elbows, students should move away from windows, shelves, and heavy objects and furniture that may fall. They should not be under light fixtures or other suspended objects. If in the classroom, students should take cover under desks, tables, or other heavy furniture.
• If in a hall, stairway, gymnasium or other area where no cover is available, the students should move to an interior wall. They should turn away from windows, kneel alongside the wall, bend their heads close to their knees, cover the sides of their heads with their elbows, and clasp hands firmly behind neck.
• If in the library, the students should immediately move away from windows and bookshelves and take cover under a desk or a table.
• If in a laboratory or kitchen, all burners should be extinguished (if possible) before taking cover. Students should stay clear of hazardous chemicals that may spill. Food Service Provider Manager will turn off the main gas.
• If in the school theater, students should duck and cover and remain in place until the tremors subside. An uncontrolled, panic-driven exit by the students must be avoided.
• If outdoors, students should move to an open space, away from buildings and overhead power lines. Students should lie down or crouch low to the ground (since legs will not be steady). Teachers and students should constantly keep an eye on their surroundings to be aware of dangers that may demand movement.
• If in a school bus or other vehicle, the vehicle should pull over and stop, away from power lines, bridges, overpasses, and buildings. Students should remain in their seats and hold on.
• Once the earthquake (shaking) has ended remain where you are for further instructions.
• Three choices are likely:
• Move to 4th floor in case of a tsunami
• Evacuate the building
• Remain in class and resume daily activities.
Actual Earthquake:
• Community follows the fire drill outlined above when they feel the ground shaking.
If an evacuation of the building is called for:
• Maintenance staff will unlock the gate to Lilly Field.
• If any students or staff members are seriously injured, contact your administrator so that the First Aid Team led by the nurse can evaluate the situation.
• If the weather is severe (heavy rain, intense cold, etc.) or if the premises become dangerous, the students should be taken to the designated off-site safe havens to wait for their parents to pick them up. The Emergency Team will communicate with parents. Students must remain at the off-site safe havens until a parent or authorized person comes to pick them up.
• The Emergency Team then must assess the damage and take appropriate measures.
• For very minor damage, the Emergency Team will decide when to reopen the school. For severe damage to the school premises and property, an emergency session of the School Board must be convened to decide where and when the operation of the school will resume.
Drill Procedure:
• The designated administrator reports over the intercom, “This is a tsunami drill. I repeat; this is a tsunami drill. Move to the fourth floor immediately.”
• Students should line up at the door ready to move to their location.
• Teachers take their class lists / emergency folders and lead the students to their assigned space (see map below).
* ELAC students should not use the bridge between buildings
* Doors should be left closed but unlocked; lights should be turned off.
• Support staff that are assigned Emergency Backpacks bring them to the 4th floor.
• Teachers and their classes move to the area of the fourth floor where they are to assemble.
* Teachers stay with the class that they were teaching when the tsunami drill was called.
• Enter a room in your school’s designated area that has space. A classroom should hold approximately 30 students.
* If you have a mixed class of MS and HS, choose a room in either section.
* Teachers do not take attendance during a drill
• All staff and teachers without students, move to the 4th floor and enter a room in your school’s section.
• Administrators sweep their designated areas starting with the first floor continue to move to the next floor when their area is clear.
• Once the threat of a tsunami has passed, an all-clear message will be issued and students and teachers will return to their classrooms.
• Community follows the fire drill outlined above.
• Teachers take roll of their class that they were teaching at the time of the tsunami, not their homeroom; Principals will come to the room and ask teachers for absentees.
