We use technology at CA so that students can have a rich, challenging and engaging learning experience where they can be creative, collaborate with others, and develop critical thinking skills and digital citizenship. Because devices are so powerful in many different ways, we also need to make sure that technology use does not have a negative impact on learning and our wellbeing. We have developed the following expectations and responsibilities so that all students and teachers have the same understandings of constructive use of technology at CA.
In Class
Laptops may only be used when a teacher invites you to use them in class
High School students may use their laptops during free periods
Make sure that your laptop is charged and ready before you come to school in the morning.
Everyone has their own accounts and devices. Don’t use someone else’s device without an invitation.
People first, screens second. When someone is talking, close your screen and make eye contact with the speaker.
Stay on task: no games, social media, chat windows, or extra tabs should be open while at school.
On Campus
Smartphones must be kept in your locker during school hours (8:00am - 3:30pm) unless a teacher invites you to use it for class.
High School students can keep their phones in their bags during the day but can only use it in class if a teacher invites them to do so
Store your laptop safely during breaks and keep it away from food and drinks.
Carry your laptop with two hands and use a laptop case to keep it safe from damage.
Do not leave your laptop unattended, even when it is charging.
Bring your own charger and headphones to school.
Safety and Wellbeing
Be a good digital citizen. Honor your relationships with respectful behavior online and in person.
Regularly update and shutdown your computer. Report any tech issues to IT as soon as you notice them.
Never share your personal information or passwords with anyone online.
Don’t download apps or programs from the Internet without adult supervision.
Never take pictures or video of someone without their enthusiastic consent.
We value face-to-face time because of the benefits it brings. For this reason, we encourage our community to prioritize in-person interactions by limiting their use of screens during free periods and lunch.
Data Access and Privacy
Internet site addresses accessed, including websites and email, are retained in electronic logs. ICT staff do not track individuals inside our network, but evidence of unacceptable activities found in school logs will be investigated.
ICT staff have the right to access, open, examine and/or delete electronic files that violate these expectations on school-owned computers (not including those rented or leased from the school by families under the Laptop Usage Agreement), and remote or local school servers without the user's consent.
CA staff do not have the right to search students' personal computers, without the consent of the principal and parents. This includes computers rented or leased from the school by families under the Laptop Usage Agreement.
CA staff have the right to ask students to display their browser history or app usage if the staff member believes that the student has engaged in unacceptable activities in class. This is only done with the student's knowledge and consent while the student is present.
Canadian Academy is not responsible for any loss of data.
