In addition to CA’s high school diploma, students may work towards the IB Diploma. The IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous course of study designed for students in Grades 11 and 12. The two-year course encourages students to develop strong subject knowledge and understanding as well as the skills and attributes needed to become independent, life-long learners and global citizens. The IB Diploma is a qualification that is widely recognized and respected by universities across the world. Information about IB recognition can be found here.
IB Diploma candidates are required to complete courses in six subject areas: English, a second language, humanities, science, mathematics and, either an arts subject or a sixth choice from another subject group. Of the six subjects, students must study three at ‘Higher Level’ and three at ‘Standard Level’. In addition, all IB Diploma candidates must complete the IB Core components: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS). Each subject earns a grade of 1-7, with 3 additional points available for the Core components. To earn the IB Diploma, students must earn a minimum of 24 points.
Alternatively, students may elect to take IB courses. IB course students are not required to take the balance of subjects necessary for the full IB Diploma. They can choose individual IB courses, at Higher or Standard Level, and complete individual components of the IB Core. IB Course students take the external IB examinations in their subjects and are awarded certificates by the IB.
Students should speak with their counsellor, teachers and the IB Diploma Coordinator to discuss which pathway and combination of courses is most appropriate for them. This may depend on a student’s personal interests, educational goals and academic progress to date.
