How will I be assessed in this subject?
The Course Type is 100% Portfolio based;
50% in Year 11
50% in Year 12.
You will be assessed on what you achieve rather than writing about it, so you will need to collect evidence to show what you have done.
You can use the following types of evidence; items you have made, photographs, recordings, drawings, witness statements, letters, brief notes, work log, notebook, tape, observations etc.
What will I study?
How to care for and meet the needs of a young child for example, bathing, feeding, toileting, taking care of the teeth and hair of the baby safely, selecting suitable clothing and footwear and caring for children with special needs.
You will also learn how to provide a safe and secure environment for young children, for example, how to prevent cot death, be able to identify common illnesses and diseases in children and know how to look after a baby when it is sick, and finally be able to explain how to change a nappy safely and securely and deal with nappy rash.
You will also study and learn about careers that work with babies and young children closely in the statutory, voluntary, and private sector.
You will have the opportunity to complete three practical activities within this unit also for example bathing a baby, making a bottle of formula milk, and putting a baby to bed safely.
This unit is 100% controlled assessment and you will complete tasks and written evidence throughout the year to produce your final portfolio that will be assessed.
The importance of language and communication activities in children’s play, looking at choosing suitable books, poems, and rhymes to encourage good communication skills at different stages of a child’s development.
You will explore how the use of suitable activities, experiences and equipment will encourage children to talk and listen and how different games encourage learning at different stages of a child’s development.
You will explore and look at common communication difficulties in nursery children and looking at the expected speech and language development of children at specific milestones.
You will also have the opportunity to engage in three practical based tasks such as story-telling, setting up a book corner, devising a game suitable for young children and creating visual aids, such as props for story-telling or nursery rhymes, to support a child’s learning.
What career pathways are available to me if I study this subject?
This course is designed to allow students to progress to further qualifications such as the Level 2 and 3 Children’s Care Learning and Development Courses or Health and Social Care A Level.

Student Testimonials
In Year 10, I chose to study Childcare as one of my options as I have a natural fondness of caring for children and babies therefore, I expected that Childcare would be a very interesting and worthwhile subject to study.
In the future, I would like to pursue a career as a Paediatrician and I assumed that studying Childcare, along with Science, would help me to reach that goal. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Childcare this year.
I have liked researching many different job roles in the Early Years sector and I look forward to completing the practical activities, once we return to school.
By studying Childcare for GCSE you open up a wide range of interesting careers such as; Paediatrician, Midwife, Labour and Delivery Nurse, Registered Childminder, Childcare Manager and many more.
If you are interested in any of these careers, I would highly recommend choosing OS Childcare as it will benefit you in your future career and it’s a most enjoyable subject with very supportive and wonderful teachers to help you along the way.
Orla, Year 11
In Childcare, I have learnt how to physically care for babies; I can bath and put a baby to bed safely and I can make a bottle of formula milk correctly to feed a baby.
In Year 12, I have studied how nursery rhymes can help to develop a child intellectually by supporting them with their speech and language development. I have also carried out many practical activities this year and have created a table top game, a story corner plan for a nursery setting and made several nursery rhyme props that would be suitable for a nursery child.
I personally have found Childcare to be a very rewarding and an enjoyable subject to study especially the practical elements and I would even go as far to say that it is my favourite GCSE subject to study.
