Why should I choose Gaelige?
Gaeilge gives students the opportunities to continue on their IME journey. Students will build upon their prior Irish learning and
work towards a more mature level of Irish which is a firm base for A-level Irish. Students explore Irish literature, song and the
aural tradition of Ireland while discovering the high relevance and role of Irish in today’s modern society.
How will I be assessed in this subject?
During the two year course in Gaeilge at GCSE level you will be assessed in three areas which are talking and listening, reading in Irish and Writing in Irish. The assessment will be a mix of Controlled Assessment and formal exams in these three areas.
What will I study?
What career pathways are available to me if I study this subject?
You will be able to go on and study Irish at AS and A2 level.
Gaeilge has been strongly linked with a wide range of careers, from media and journalism, translation and politics to teaching and law.

Student Testimonials
Ní amháin go raibh craic iontach i GCSE Gaeilge, ach bhí sé an-úsáideach domsa freisin. De ghnáth bíonn líon na ndaoine atá sa rang níos lú agus mar sin de má tá aon fhadhb agat is furasta é a cheartú. Tá sé chomh tábhachtach do d’chuid líofacht go mbíonn an deis agat An Ghaeilge a labhairt agus cuirtear béim mhór ar an chaint sa chúrsa seo. Tugann sé bunús níos fearr duit agus tú ag dul isteach go dtí an A-leibheál fosta. Mholfainn go mór duit iarracht a dhéanamh fanacht le do chuid Gaeilge agus tú ag dul tríd na scoile, labhair a oiread agus is féidir leat agus déan cinnte aird níos mó a thabhairt ar ghramadach ná mar a rinne mé! Ar a bharr sin ó d’fhág mé an scoil fuair mé an oiread sin deiseanna trí Ghaeilge mar sh. ag craoladh seó raidió le raidio failte, ag tosú podchraoladh, deiseanna teilifíse srl. agus ní thiocfadh aon cheann de na deiseanna seo chun cinn gan an leibhéal líofachta a chuidigh GCSE Gaeilge liom a fhorbairt. agus má tá céist ag aon duine ariamh cur iad i dteagmháil liom ! Súil agam go bhfuil tú go maith!
Not only was the craic great in GCSE Gaeilge, but it was a very useful subject for me. Usually the class sizes are small, so if you have a problem, it can be easily solved. It is so important to keep up with your fluency of Irish throughout your school life in St. Malachy’s. It gives you an excellent foundation for A-level, making the transition much easier.
I would advise you to speak as much Irish as possible at every opportunity and if you can, pay attention to the grammar.
Since I have left school, I have had amazing opportunities through Irish, for example, broadcasting a radio show on radio fáilte, starting a successful podcast and various television opportunities. All of these wonderful opportunities are as a direct result of the level fluency in Irish I have, and which I developed through GCSE Gaeilge. If anyone has any questions at all, feel free to contact me.
