Why should I choose this subject?
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science is intended as an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector.
The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of the applied science sector. Learners who wish to take this qualification will have completed a Level 2 programme of learning with GCSEs or vocational qualifications.

What will I study?
AS Areas of Study
This unit covers some of the key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics
Learners will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries.
A2 Areas of Study
Learners will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate.
Learners will focus on the physiological make up of three human body systems (musculoskeletal, lymphatic and digestive), how the systems function and what occurs during dysfunction.
What career pathways are available to me if I study this subject?
BTEC qualifications are an alternative to A-Levels and are accepted as an entry requirement for universities and further education. It will appeal to students who not only wish to follow paramedical, laboratory technicians, nursing and sports science careers, but will enable all who are successful to access a wide range of employment opportunities.
