Respect in the Toilets
Use taps, soap and paper correctly
Clean up after yourself
Ask a teacher before you leave the room
Use taps, paper and soap correctly
Sometimes people use lots and lots of toilet paper... We know that this can block the toilet if we use too much!
Have a think about how much toilet paper is needed?
How does the toilet roll show you how much to use?
Do you need to wrap it around your hand?
How should you use it? What should you do after that?
We also have soap to clean our hands.
What does soap do?
How does it work?
When should you use it?
What might happen if it drips onto the floor?
Next, chat together and see how long you think it takes to overfill our sinks when the plug hole gets blocked... Think about:
The capacity of a sink
The speed of the water
How much water would be needed to overflow
What can block a sink
Watch the video to understand what happens when we flood a room if we accidentally left the taps on. Think about...
If we left a tap running at our school or our house, what damage might we cause?
What happens to the floor and the walls?
What happens to our belongings?
Who do we have to call?
If you have time, make a short video to show how to use the taps, soap and paper correctly. Share it on seesaw or with a buddy class to help them learn too.
REMEMBER: Use, Flush, Wash, Leave!
Clean Up After Yourself
It's really important that we keep our toilets clean to make sure that we don't spread germs around, catch them ourselves or have a messy bathroom to walk into.
Chat with a buddy and see if you can think of all the easy things that we could do to keep our toilets tidy. If you need some hints think about...
Things that you might touch
Things that you might fall over or slip on
Things that could be dangerous to other people
Why do you think a bathroom should be clean? Chat to a buddy about what needs cleaning and tidying in a bathroom. Think about:
The floor
The sink
The toilet
The water
What would happen if the toilets were not clean? Would you want to use them? Who should clean the bathrooms vs who should tidy them?
What can you do to make the cleaners jobs easier?
If you have time, make a poster that we could put up in our toilets to remind people of what to do!
Ask a Teacher Before You Leave the Room
Together make a list of all the different things that might happen in our school during a school day and where people might go. Think about:
Assembly
Library visits
PE
Shows
Music lessons
Meetings
Why might it be important to ask a teacher before you leave the room?
Now think about what you could do to ask to leave the room if you needed to go to the toilet. How could you ask? What could you say? Is there a system in your classroom already working well that you could share with others?
If you have time, design a system or signal that you could use when your teacher might be busy and teach it to a group or another class.
