Greet the Office Staff on Entry
Play the video to the class first. In the juniors, ask them how they felt listening to it and reflect on this together. In the seniors, ask them how many greetings they already knew.
Now, talk about how people like it when they are noticed and greeted first. It is a polite thing to do.
When we go to the admin area we are looking for assistance from Mrs Howe or whoever is behind the desk. We should greet them if they are not busy with someone else and be kind and cheerful.
Next try a role play. One person pretends that they are in the office and a student comes in. The student walks straight over and demands a roll for the reliever teacher.
How does the person in the office feel?
Would they feel happy to help?
Do they feel happy?
Now try it again but this time the student walks in and says hello or good morning to the person in the office. When they have greeted the person, the student then asks for a roll for the reliever, says thank you and leaves.
How does the person in the office feel?
Would they feel happy to help?
Do they feel happy?
Does the student feel happy too?
Does the person in the office look relaxed or smile?
If you have time, practise similar role plays and use some different greetings and video to share them on seesaw or with a buddy.
Wait Your Turn
With the class or a small group watch the video of Cookie Monster talking about waiting. Discuss some of the reasons why we might go to the office. Think about…
Getting medical help,
Handing in a form or payment,
To get something for your teacher,
To ask about something,
To take the ‘red card’ for teacher support.
Think about which of these are important and rank them in order of importance.
Next, think about who else might be talking to Mrs Howe?
Teachers,
Parents,
Mrs Jansen,
Other students.
Is it polite to interrupt? How often does that happen? What should we do instead?
Most of the time we are visiting the office for minor but necessary errands, and you can wait! If others are talking to Mrs Howe, wait quietly behind them. You normally only have to wait a few minutes.
What if you are going to the office for something urgent, such as medical attention or red card support? Discuss how you might get attention.
If you are visiting the office for something urgent, you could say ‘excuse me’ loudly or say ‘I need help urgently’.
If you have time, role-play an urgent and then a non-urgent errand to the office and share it with another class. You might like to video it and post it to seesaw too!
